The Complete Idiot's Guide to Photoshop 6 by Robert Stanley. Que. 2000. $ 20

Photshop 6 is a big and sometimes overwhelming. But, it's also a lot of fun once you learn use the ins and outs of program. While, Adobe does supply a manual, it can be overwhelming for the first-time user. The easiest way to unravel the needs of the user is with the Complete Idiot's Guide to Photoshop6.
This book gives you an overview of the program and helps you decide whether you want to purchase Photoshop 6. Keep in mind, that Photoshop is about $500 new. For someone upgrading from an earlier version -- plan on lightening your wallet about $300. I use a version called Photoshop LE or Light Edition. It was useful to me because the Light version has some of the same applications as the full version. It answered many of my questions.
The best way to use any guide is first read through the book and try the solutions and approaches that the authors suggest. Then, take some of your own photos and try to manipulate the photo on your own. If the color is wrong, then look up the color palette in the Idiot's guide and try to manipulate the color balance until you get something that you are happy with. The book also explains photo restoration and repair. Basically you get a how-to guide to the digital darkroom. Using the right tool, the user can do any darkroom trick such as burning and dodging and cropping. You also get cookbook approaches to redeye removal, and sandwiching or using two or more photos to create and new photo. The book also gives you a cheat sheet to show shortcuts and keystrokes, learn the shortcuts and the program will fall into place.
Once you start playing with Photoshop 6, sooner or later you're going to need the plug-in tools. This is where The Complete Idiot's Guide to Photoshop 6 will earn its keep. For a beginner, learning the 26 plus plug-ins can be confusing. Look up the plug-in that you need. Then, learn how to use it before you mess up a photo and have to start over. Again, time and practice will eliminate most problems but if you are new to Photoshop 6, then a little extra help is nice.
Everything I found in the book was accurate and easy to follow. This would make a perfect manual for anyone in an office, or print shop setting. It would also make a good textbook for group training session or anyone working on his or her own to learn the use of Photoshop 6.
The best way to learn Photoshop 6 is to have fun with it. When all else fails, read the instructions or get the book: The Complete Idiot's guide to Photoshop 6. Any bookstore should have it in the computer section. For those in Collierville, go to Hooked on Books at 747 W. Poplar and I'll get a copy for you.
